Introducing Purpose Commons

Purpose Commons is a welcoming, collaborative space where people can gather to understand the science of purpose and to unlock opportunities and transform existing systems for more young people to flourish. In Purpose Commons, youth-serving leaders, parents, scholars, young people, innovators, technologists, policymakers, activists, and advocates can all learn from one another. Just as many different plants can spring up from a single garden, a variety of programs, projects, stories, and tools will emerge from Purpose Commons.

We created Purpose Commons to meet the growing demand for assistance from parents, policymakers, and practitioners – and from young people themselves. Today, so many people are reaching for something better than what the culture’s darkest elements are offering us. They’re searching for the joy that rises when we get to be part of something bigger than ourselves, for the sunlight that we feel when we tune into that feeling of forward momentum and purpose, and when we receive encouragement and tangible support to explore and follow it.

To make it happen, we drew inspiration from America’s oldest park, Boston Common, which for nearly 400 years has attracted people into a shared space to work, play, and dream together. In fact, we modeled the best of the commons in bringing this idea to the world. Each of us came to this work building on decades of influences and experiences drawn from our respective organizations and fields that kept purpose central, from Jana's early work at Hopelab co-creating play-based supports with and for young people living with cancer to Tony's participation in and partnership with 4H chapters across the county. Over the years, hundreds of people had a hand in elevating the ideas behind Purpose Commons and bringing them into the world.

Further, the concept of a Commons is appealing because it decenters the individual champion of any one cause. By this we mean, in a collaborative space, opportunities, resources, and recognition are more abundant and viable. Often, research and translation work elevates individuals through various forms of awards and recognition. As an infrastructure for collaboration, Purpose Commons is an intentional act of distributing the work and its outcomes.

Answering The Call

When we hear the former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy's "parting prescription" for the American people - connecting relationships, acts of service, and a sense of purpose in life - we know that Purpose Commons can be part of the answer to this call. This has to be a place where people can come together to formulate ways to elevate purpose so that fewer young people sink into despair. Purpose Commons can be a place for wondering and learning. It gives us a platform for holding up what communities discover and accelerating the adoption of promising practices.

As ambitious as it might sound, we believe we can collectively use Purpose Commons to help solve many problems the country is confronting. For more than 2,000 years, people have been voluntarily coming together to explore and pursue what it means to lead a life filled with purpose. Recognizing that the ancient notions of purpose still captivate human minds today, Purpose Commons gives all of us a place to meet up, bring our unique skills and expertise, identify shared interests, and work together to improve conditions for ourselves, our families, and our communities.

A Gorgeous and Difficult Opportunity

Purpose Commons is exciting because it’s the door people come through to find people who share their aspirations for young people and their concerns. In this space, people can come together to think about their collective future and to pursue the ancient idea of “the best within us.” This is both gorgeous and difficult, in the best ways possible. The opportunity for individuals to self-organize in pursuit of collective action is thrilling. Purpose Commons can be a place for all of this to happen.
